Changes to our pricing model

Did you know almost 90% of the projects on Kumu are public or supported by our education discount?

We’ve been thinking long and hard about how to maintain our commitment to free public projects and accessible pricing while also supporting Kumu’s ability to continue growing and improving the platform. With the push to add more robust and mature collaboration features to Kumu, we’ve made the decision to add these features for organizations only and treat organizations as a paid tier in Kumu.

This means that going forward, maintaining an organization account on Kumu will cost $10/month. With this you get unlimited public projects, and all the great features that organization projects will soon include. Public projects are still free and private organization projects will cost $20/month.

What’s changing:

Per-project pricing. We’re doing away with defined plan limits that force you to pay for more projects than you need. Instead, we’re switching to a true per-project pricing model where you’ll pay based on the number of private projects you have active at any given time.

Private project archiving. Organizations will now support archiving, which means you no longer have to pay for those private projects you want to keep accessible on Kumu but no longer need to edit. Note that there is a $20 fee to unarchive a project and comments are locked once archived.

PDFs. Organizations get a huge boost with free PDFs that you can create on your own. Personal accounts can still request PDFs for a reduced price of $5 per PDF (~ 1 day turnaround).

What’s NOT changing:

  • Personal accounts and public projects will continue to be free
  • Private project costs stay the same for personal ($9) and organization ($20) accounts
  • Pricing is still per-project, instead of per-user (except for Enterprise)
  • Annual pricing gets you a 20% discount
  • Classroom use of Kumu is free
  • We still love you and are committed to ensuring Kumu is accessible for all (see postcard pricing below…)

What this means for you:

If you have a personal account, not much will change. You’ll get cheaper PDFs and you’ll only need to pay for the private projects you’re actually using, rather than being forced into defined plan limits.

If you have an organization account, as of October 1st you’ll begin paying $10 per month to maintain that organization account. If you only have public projects, that’s all you’ll pay. If you have private projects, instead of paying based on a defined plan limit, you’ll be billed $20/month for each private project under your account (not counting archived projects).

We expect the move to per-project pricing combined with archiving means the cost you pay for Kumu will remain relatively stable. If you feel these pricing changes are going to put you in a particularly hard spot, please see our postcard pricing below or reach out and we can discuss options.

Can’t afford to pay $10/month for your organization?

There are two options if you can’t (or just don’t want to) pay $10/month for your organization:

  1. Move the projects under your organization to your personal account, and delete your organization account.
  2. Mail us a hand-written postcard explaining why you can’t afford to pay and what good your project will do for the world.

If you have any feedback or questions, please reach out to us via jeff@kumu.io.
